Cross Radio

For the Radio Day Cross Radio will present some of the most up-coming bands from the area of former Yugoslavia. With music the programme-makers will gather thoughts, spirit and ideas that have in the past connected and are still connecting different languages, cultures, habits and diversities. Cross radio will prove that the friendship among former Yugoslavian peoples is still alive and goes on.

The Cross Radio project was one of the first initiatives for re-building bridges of communication and cooperation in radio and the cultural field in the area of former Yugoslavia. In February 2001 a group of radio activists from Radio B92/Belgrade, Radio Student/Zagreb and Radio Student/Ljubljana came up with an idea of radio programme exchange on regular weekly basis. Each radio produced a 20 minute long feature about current activities and happenings in local cultural scene (focus was on new, young, independent cultural production) and shipped material on recorded mini-discs to other two stations with help of public transport operators. Each radio station then broadcasted all three productions in one 1-hour Cross Radio programme time.
After few months of positive experiences, new radio stations were invited to join the project - the idea was to cover all scenes of all ex-Yugoslav regions - and internet became a media for exchanging programme files. Cross Radio is gathering thoughts, spirit and ideas that have in the past connected and are still connecting different languages, cultures, habits and diversities in the ex-Yu region. Cross radio will prove that the friendship among former Yugoslavian peoples is still alive and goes on.

At the moment Cross Radio project integrates action from 12 radio stations - 5 from Serbia, 2 from Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2 from Slovenia, 1 from Kosovo, 1 from Macedonia and 1 from Switzerland (produced by members of the Bosnian community in Zurich). Cross Radio celebrates 5 years of continuous action, more than 220 shows were produced and broadcasted so far.
